Understanding Shipping Lines: Which One Is Right for Your Haul

A shipping line is essentially a contracted route between your agent's warehouse and your country. Agents do not own planes or ships; they buy space in bulk from logistics companies like China Post, DHL, SF Express, and specialized freight forwarders. Each line has different characteristics: speed, cost, tracking granularity, weight limits, and customs clearance style. The perfect line for a 1kg package of accessories is not the same as the perfect line for a 10kg haul of sneakers and hoodies.

Postal lines like EUB and EMS usually pass through customs as regular mail. They are less scrutinized than express couriers because postal volumes are too high to inspect every package. Express couriers like DHL and FedEx use commercial customs channels. They are faster but more likely to ask for documentation or charge duties. If you live in a country with strict customs (Germany, Italy), postal lines are safer. If you live in the US or UK where personal-use thresholds are high, express couriers are worth the premium for speed.

All shipping lines carry some risk of loss or damage. Postal lines offer minimal compensation — usually a few dollars per kg. Express couriers have better claim processes but require extensive documentation. Agent insurance covers the item value, not shipping cost. If a $300 haul gets lost, insurance refunds $300 but you still lose the $60 you paid for shipping. Some buyers self-insure by splitting large hauls into two smaller packages. The logic: two 4kg packages are less likely to both get seized than one 8kg package.
